When a drive axle reaches the end of its service life, the old model number is useful—but it is rarely enough to specify a dependable replacement. North American fleets often operate mixed equipment, and earlier machines may have been rebuilt more than once. A short, structured technical record helps the maintenance team, distributor and manufacturer evaluate the same application without relying on assumptions.

1. Identify the machine and its real duty

Record the manufacturer, model, operating weight, tire size and axle position. Add a brief description of the work cycle: travel speed, typical grade, loaded and unloaded operation, hours per shift, start-stop frequency and any recurring shock loads. This establishes whether the axle is serving a yard machine, material handler, mining vehicle or another off-highway application.

2. Document the axle configuration

Confirm whether the unit is driven, steered or both. Note the differential arrangement, final-drive type, wheel-end configuration and any integrated brake or steering functions. Photograph the complete axle before removal, then capture both wheel ends, input connection, mounting points, steering cylinders and visible identification plates.

3. Measure the interfaces

A useful dimensional sheet includes overall width, track width, spring or frame mounting centers, input flange or yoke dimensions, wheel bolt pattern, pilot diameter and clearance around nearby structures. Mark every value clearly as inches or millimeters. A mixed-unit drawing without labels is a common source of avoidable errors.

4. Confirm ratio, load and operating limits

Provide the axle ratio and, when available, input torque, maximum wheel torque, static and dynamic axle load, maximum travel speed and grade requirement. If a value is unknown, label it as unknown instead of estimating. Tire rolling radius, transmission output data and machine load cases can help the engineering team check the relationship between speed, torque and axle capacity.

5. Define braking and steering requirements

For service and parking brakes, record the brake type, actuation method, control pressure range and required holding function. For a steering axle, include steering angle, cylinder dimensions, linkage arrangement and stop locations. These functions should be reviewed as part of the complete axle, not treated as accessories after the main geometry has been selected.

6. Agree on acceptance information

Before ordering, clarify drawing approval, interface confirmation, inspection records, paint or corrosion-protection expectations, packaging and replacement-parts documentation. The required evidence depends on the machine and the buyer’s own acceptance process; it should be stated explicitly rather than inferred from a catalog description.
